Barnes Block Building
Eau Claire, WISCONSIN
National Register of Historic Places
Built in 1893 to serve the growing lumber city of Eau Claire, the new
building housed the Chippewa Valley Lumberman's Bank, a large department store
and upper level office. The 1989 restoration included exterior masonry cleaning
and tuckpointing, restoration of all window and door openings, new roofing restoration
of the turret sheet metal trim and reconstruction of the street level commercial spaces.
To assist in accurate restoration, extensive study of archive photo of this Romanesque
revival style building was done especially at the main entrance lobby. Interior public
spaces were faithfully restored whenever feasible and new areas were carefully designed
to recall the period. Also included in work are new lighting concept and cooling
and fire safety systems.
